Auto Black Boxes: Will They Invade Your Privacy?

The Wall Street Journal -- If you thought having EZ Pass in your car would make it too easy for the government to track you, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

The Senate passed a bill in March that calls for “mandatory event data recorders” (or black boxes) to be installed in all new passenger motor vehicles, starting with the 2015 models, and which would record data before, during or after a crash, according to KurzweilAI.net.

The bill, which can be seen here, has a privacy provision but gives the government the authority to access the black box in a number of circumstances, including court order, consent of the owner, an investigation or inspection, or to determine the need for emergency responses.

If you thought having EZ Pass in your car would make it too easy for the government to track you, you ain’t seen nothing

Creeping, Crawling Commercialism. That used to be the old buzzphrase. Now it's CORRUPTION, CRISIS, and SURVEILLANCE. And damned be those who oppose.

If you are driving a late model GM, they are already doing it. They can also do good to clear you of liability in an accident.

So, the way I see it, it will take 30-40 years to get all the older cars off the roads that don't have black boxes installed.

passivity is not in your best interest and is not what made this nation great. when did we become too lazy to govern ourselves???
Poem by Martin Niemöller that was said to have been written in 1946.
First they came for the..., and I did not speak out - because I was not a...;
Then they came for the..., and I did not speak out - because I was not a...;
Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak out for me.
The government does not know what is best for you. "The Senate passed a bill in March..." Who is profiting in this? Who benefits in the senate for government funding and regulation of this device? Most of the comments here don't seem to be concerned or casually accept that we have no modern right to privacy... SAD
vote everybody out of office that wants to take away your right to privacy. in your home, in your car, in your church, etc...

How long will it take before insurance companies get access so they can jack up your rates based on how your driving style is?

The government has become way too big and way too intrusive in the lives of the average American. I do not see that the benefits come anywhere near the level needed to balance privacy concerns.

Your cell phone tells them how fast you drive, where you frequent, and how far you drive every day.

Silly citizens! Your every move is already being tracked! If you have a cell phone, you've already been tagged with a GPS transponder! How do you think they get traffic info like finding out how fast traffic is moving on the highways!
