NY DOT invests $26.5 million to promote biking & walking to school

GasBuddy Blog -- The New York State Dept. of Transportation has announced $26.5 million in federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS) funding for 64 project sponsors to implement infrastructure improvements and public education campaigns across the State to encourage elementary and middle school children to safely walk and bike to school.

That's not nickels and dimes.

The projects supported by this round of federal funding will help children get to school safely by providing features such as sidewalks, multi-use paths, crosswalks and pedestrian signals near schools,” DOT Commissioner Joan McDonald said. “The education component of the program can help families make healthy, sustainable transportation choices and teach kids how to safely use...

I have not noticed an increase of children walking to swachool. Most parents over this nation will not allow their kids to walk to and from school. Although, with all of the out of work parents, they have the time to walk with them.

Only in areas that need something like this, less walking on busy roads and in heavy traffic areas. More walking, bicycling and less riding the bus from home door to school door. More excerise for those fat kids! The school buses routes I have seen, the children have to walk very little and are mostly driven from home to school, with very little walking inbetween. How much to implement this program? Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, vehicle manufactures Produce and the population ‘Drives’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!

No sidewalks or bike trails were available. Something seems terribly wrong with this program. Its my opinion that we have a very serious spending problem in this country.
