Gasoline costs, energy rivet candidates' attention
Thursday, August 07, 2008
The Associated Press -- WASHINGTON (AP) — To understand why Barack Obama and John McCain are emphasizing solutions to the country's energy woes and have scrambled to change their positions, look no further than the voters' distress over $4-a-gallon gasoline and its wide ripple effect.

The presidential candidates' sparring over energy peaked this week as each sought to capitalize on a topic that touches every voter and provides a way to discuss the declining economy at home, national security threats abroad and the changing climate worldwide.

"Sen. McCain's energy plan reads like an early Christmas list for oil and gas lobbyists," Obama charged Wednesday, a day after accusing the GOP of misstating his proposals. He is using the issue to paint the four-term Arizona senator as a Washington insider beholden to special interests while trying to strike a balance on the environment vs. exploration debate that divides Democrats.

We used to have several small oil refineries. They kept the price of gasoline lower. Than the big oil companies bought them all out. Thus allowing them to control the price of gasoline. This does not seem right, but it happened. We have not had a gas war since.

tdn117,

Right on!

The Dems can only survive by blaming others and creating a convenient scapegoat (kinda like what Hitler did).

Most of the problems are perpetuated by them, so they can keep power. They keep minorities down, so they can keep promising what they never intend to deliver. They blame "Big Oil" for stuff they (the Dems) cause, because they know the majority of people are incapable of independent, rational thought. It's easier to hate than to think, and the Dems are experts at spreading hate and suppressing thought.

Lengus - great idea, but instead of getting rid of ALL incumbents, lets get rid of the ones that won't allow us to get our own energy resources.

"Sen. McCain's energy plan reads like an early Christmas list for oil and gas lobbyists," Obama charged Wednesday"

I can't believe people and the media keep falling for this crap. Why is it Democrats always have to demonize someone making money? Hey, if we don't like the oil companies making so much money, we are all free to step up to the plate and start up our own oil company. Then we can charge lower prices because we all care so much and want to make as little as possible, and our stockholders won't mind a bit [sarc].

Better yet, if we are so ticked off about oil companies making all that money, instead of complaining about it, we can join them by buying their stock! While I personally don't choose to do this, if I did directly own stocks like BP or Exxon, every time gas prices go up, I might not be so unhappy because I know my investment is probably going up along with the price.

Let's face it.

Two very different men, two very different viewpoints.

One does not like high gas prices at all and one does not like them rising so fast.

Both agree that we need alternatives.

Both know that raising supply will lower prices both in the short run and the long term.

Both know that the oil rig of today is not even comparable (environmental wise) to the oil rigs of 30,40 or 50 years ago.

Do we want to go bankrupt waiting for alternative energy to get cheaper over the next 30 years or do we want to increase supply to lower energy costs and keep us out of bankruptcy while alternative energies are developed and made cheaper?

I find it interesting that Obama was absolutely opposed to drilling (and in favor of $4+ gas) and is now OK with drilling. I also find it interesting that as gas has gone up McCain was interested in saving Polar Bears, but will now entertain drilling in ANWR. Hypocrites or "maturation on the issues"? You decide.

I don't understand the Democratic Party's position on energy. Could it be: "Do nothing in order to get elected" They don't have my vote of confidence.

These guys are Johnny Come Latelys. This is not a new problem. They've sat on their hands for the last four years and allowed us to become more dependant on foreign oil when there's enough untapped reserves in our own country to cover our needs for the next 80 years. Pelosi goes on vacation, ignoring what voters clearly want, while the rest of us cancel vacations because of high fuel costs.

When the airlines and hotels start closing down because nobody can afford to travel, maybe, just maybe, these geniuses will get a clue.
